The Bible
The Bible is the word of God. The Bible is essentially, for Christians, a collection of smaller books and writings, a conversation over centuries, that witness to the saving acts of God in Jesus Christ. The Word of God (with a capital ‘W’) is Jesus Christ, the Son of God; the word of God (with a small ‘w’) in the Bible bears witness to, or shows us, who Jesus Christ is.
What is essential in the Bible is God’s Good News for humanity and all of creation, as revealed in the flesh by Jesus Christ, and communicated to us through God’s Holy Spirit. It is not necessary, as Christians, to believe that the Bible is perfect and exactly right in every detail – only God is perfect, and the Bible is not God. The Bible is, however, the reliable, inspired witness to God’s relationship with us and all creation.
